779,439. Electromagnetic clutches. HENTSCHEL, G. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 13, 1954], No. 34891/55. Class 35. An electromagnetic device for converting rotary motion into a reciprocating or oscillating motion comprises a rotor 4 having two pairs of inwardly projecting poles 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6, 6<SP>1</SP> surrounding an oscillating member having two sets of staggered poles 1, 2 arranged in two planes in alignment with the rotor poles. Exciting windings 7 are wound around poles 5, 6 and 51, 6<SP>1</SP>. A flexible coupling 3 connects the poles 1, 2. In Fig. 2, the rotating member comprises a cylinder 10 having L-shaped yokes 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, 16 arranged to co-operate with L-shaped cores 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 13, 13<SP>1</SP> attached to an axially reciprocating drum 8. The poles 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 13, 13<SP>1</SP> carry exciting windings 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. In both embodiments the arrangements are such that, when the surrounding rotor is rotated by an external means, periodic forces are produced causing the inner member to oscillate or reciprocate.
