Abstract
The invention comprises anthracene derivatives of the formula <FORM:0781237/IV (a)/1> (wherein X is chlorine, bromine or iodine and R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-6 carbon atoms) and their acid-addition salts, and the preparation of their hydrohalides by reacting the corresponding N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-R-9-aminomethylanthracenes or acid-addition salts thereof with a hydrohalic acid, a phosphorus halide or a thionyl halide. This process may be combined with the preparation of the hydroxy compound by heating in an inert solvent a 9-halomethylanthracene and an amine HN(R)-CH2CH2OH. Acids suitable for the formation of acid-addition salts include mineral acids and acetic, citric, tartaric and lactic acids. Examples describe the preparation of N-(2-chloroethyl)-9 - aminomethylanthracine hydrochloride, N - (2 - chloroethyl) - N - ethyl - 9 - aminomethylanthracene hydrochloride and N - (2 - bromethyl) - N - ethyl - 9 - aminomethylanthracene hydrobromide, and the preparation of N - (2 - iodoethyl) - N - ethyl - 9 - aminomethylanthracene hydriodide and further chlorine containing amino-methylanthracenes is also referred to. Starting materials. 9-Halomethylanthracenes are prepared by reacting 9-hydroxymethylanthracenes with, for example, hydrobromic acid in presence of sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid in presence of zinc chloride, hydriodic acid, phosphorus halides or thionyl halides.
