Abstract

<PICT:0781174/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0781174/IV (b)/2> Contact of a treating medium such as steam, a gas, or a liquid, with a fibrous web or yarns in web form, which is or are guided under tension through the medium, is enhanced by the provision of one or more elongated hollow bodies having operative parts extending in the longitudinal direction of the body and adjacent to the yarns or the web, and of a drive for imparting to the body or bodies an oscillating movement of rotation about a longitudinal axis. As shown, a web A, Fig. 2, is guided under tension through diametrically opposed slots in a hollow cylinder 1 which is given a rotational oscillatory movement about its axis. The operative parts of the cylinder may be provided with flanges 19 which may be parallel as shown, or inclined, may point in the same or opposite directions, and may be perforated. Alternatively the edges of the slots may be connected by webs 21, 22, Fig. 9, forming a throat for the passage of the web and the treating medium. A hollow body may have two or more pairs of slots through which 2 or more webs pass in parallel, or a single web in 2 or more parallel courses. One or more guide spindles may be provided inside the hollow body to deflect the web or webs so as to emerge through a slot or slots angularly arranged with respect to the entrance slot or slots. The web may be carried through a slotted, angularly-oscillating, hollow cylinder while supported and guided by a hollow, perforated drum. In other forms, the web passes through a slot formed between closely spaced parallel wires or strips carried externally of an elongated hollow body. The two halves of a hollow body may oscillate as one or independently, or only one half of a hollow body may be provided. The operating flanges may be carried externally of a closed hollow body.
