Abstract

780.893. Sewing machines. DURKOPPWERKE AKT.-GES. March 11, 1955 [March 15, 1954], No. 7151/55. Class 112 A method of sewing together a pair of fabric elements, one of which needs to be gathered or puckered to reduce its length to that of the other as in the sewing of sleeves to the armholes of garments, comprises passing the elements between opposed feeding devices whilst being stitched together, one of said devices having its rate of feed varied, under control of the operator, with respect to the other device without interrupting the sewing process, in order to effect the required degree of gathering or puckering, and the extent of variation between the rates of feed being registered on an indicating device within view of the operator. As shown, the stitching is performed by a needle 21a carried by a vertically reciprocating needle bar 21, and the work passes between a constant-speed feed-dog 1 and a variable-speed feeding- foot 2. The latter is carried by a feed-bar 17 slidably mounted in a frame 15 pivoted at 16 to the machine frame. Reciprocating movement is imparted to bar 17 by conventional means (not shown). Oscillating movement is imparted to frame 15 by means of a sliding connection 14 between frame 15 and a crank 13 carried by a shaft 12, the latter being oscillated via an adjustable eccentric 3 mounted on the driving shaft 4. The eccentric is adapted to be adjusted by movement of a lever 9 connected by a linkage 25, 26, 27 to a treadle or knee press, said movement being limited by studs 21<SP>1</SP>, 22. Lever 9 is also connected by a linkage 28, 29, 32 to a pivoted pointer .33 which moves over a scale 37 to indicate the magnitude of the variation between the top and bottom feeds. A pedestal-like structure 43 carries a curved work support 44. An arm 39 pivoted to a fixed bracket 38 is adapted to be inserted between the layers of material being sewn together in order to prevent pucKering of the lower layer, when sewing with different rates of feed.
