The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sewing machine, and more particularly to a sewing machine which is adapted for operation upon the edge of a fabric, for joining fabric sections by a through and through stitching, for hemming the edges of fabric sections, or for providing overedge stitches therefor. The invention as illustrated is directed to a machine for overedging fabric sections.
An object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine having a stitch forming mechanism and a feeding mechanism wherein all of the operated parts are actuated from two shafts geared together for positive rotation and located above the work support for the material being stitched, and wherein part of the actuating members are carried by one shaft and part carried by the other.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the shafts are supported by bearings which are relatively close together with certain of the actuating members between the bearings and with one of the actuating members at the end of each shaft.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine wherein the supporting frame is in the form of a bed having a vertically extending housing for supporting the actuating parts and alongside of a wall of which housing material is fed during the stitching thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the main actuating shaft extends through the housing in a line at right angles to the plane of the wall adjacent the stitching point.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the needle bar is mounted for reciprocation in a short projecting bracket formed integral with said wall and the work support is carried by a bracket extending upwardly from the bed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein all of the actuated parts are operated from two shafts extending through the walls of the housing in lines parallel with each other and which shafts are geared together whereby one may be positively rotated from the other.
A still further object is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the actuating members for operating the stitching elements and the feeding mechanism are distributed on said two shafts so that the bearings supporting the shafts may be relatively close together.
These and other objects will in part be obvious (Cl. 1l2162) and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

The invention has to do with a sewing machine which is particularly adapted for operating at the edge of a fabric section. As illustrated the stitching mechanism produces overedge stitches. The machine includes a supporting bed preferably having formed integral therewith a housing which consists of spaced front and rear Walls and also spaced front and back side walls.
Mounted in this housing at the upper portion thereof is the main actuating shaft. It extends through the front and rear walls. There is a roller bearing for the shaft both at the rear wall and at the front wall. Said shaft projects through the front wall and carries a disk on the forward end thereof to which is attached a crank for operating the needle bar. Projecting from the front wall is a bracket carrying a bracket sleeve in which the needle bar reciprocates. Also projecting upwardly from the bed are brackets or standards carrying a work support. This work support extends alongside of the front wall of the housing and has a portion which projects laterally in front of the front side wall of the housing. The feeding mechanism includes a feed dog which moves up through the work support for engaging and feeding the fabric. This feed dog is mounted on a feed bar connected to a feed rocker for moving it back and forth and means is provided for raising and lowering the feed bar. As illustrated there are two feed dogs which are raised and lowered together but one is given a differential movement relative to the other. The direction of feed is alongside of the front wall of the housing and parallel thereto. Cooperating with the feed dog is a presser foot. In the present machine there is also a trimmer for trimming the edge of the fabric preparatory to covering the same with overedge stitches. This trimmer is operated by an eccentric on the main actuating shaft. The eccentric is located just inside of the front wall of the housing. Cooperating with the needle beneath the work support is a thread carrying looper. This thread carrying looper is oscillated by a direct connection to an eccentric strap cooperating with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft and located close to the eccentric which operates the trimmer. The feed dog is raised and lowered by a rock shaft mounted on the bed and extending into the housing and this rock shaft is oscillated by direct connection with an eccentric strap which cooperates with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft. The rock shaft carries an arm connected by a link to the feed bar. Mounted in the housing and extending through the front and rear walls thereof is an auxiliary actuating shaft which has a direct gear connection to a gear on the main actuating shaft. This auxiliary shaft extends through the front wall of the housing and carries a disk provided with a crank to which a link is connected and this link is connected to an arm attached to the feed rocker. Mounted on this auxiliary shaft is an eccentric which oscillates a cross shaft mounted on the bed beneath the work support and the cross shaft in turn is connected to a looper which cooperates with the under looper just referred to and moves over the work support so that the needle may cooperate therewith.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the sewing machine includes a supporting bed I. Said supporting bed i is provided with an upwardly extending rear wall 2 (see Fig. 4). Said bed also carries an upwardly extending front wall 3. The front wall 3 is cut away so as to provide room for the positioning of certain of the operating parts of the machine. The rear wall 2 and the front wall 3 may perhaps be referred to as end walls. At the front side of the machine is a wall 4 which is integral with the rear wall 2, and also with the front wall 3. At the rear of the housing is a cover plate 5 which serves as the rear wall of the housing.
Mounted on the bed I are supporting brackets 6, I and 8 which carry a work support 9. This work support has the edge it thereof substantially parallel with the front wall 3 of the housing. Said work support is provided with a projecting portion H which extends in front of the wall 4 of the housing. The material an: to be stitched is placed on this work support 9 and is fed along xxacrxx the work support in a path mac parallel to the front wall 3 of the housing. The work support 9 includes a throat plate l2 having feed slots l3, I3 therethrough. The material is moved across the work support and in a line parallel with the front face of the wall 3 by means of a feeding mechanism which as illustrated includes a main feed dog and an auxiliary feed dog. The main feed dog is illustrated at 14 and is positioned so as to engage the material in rear of the needle. Said main feed dog is clamped to the feed bar l5. Said feed bar I5 is provided with upstanding spaced bearing lugs l 6 and H and the lug I! has a forwardly projecting bracket l8 on which the main feed dog I4 is mounted. The feed bar I5 is pivoted to a feed rocker I9 which is mounted for oscillation on a rod 20 carried by bearing lugs formed integral with the supporting bed i. The auxiliary feed dog is indicated at 2! and is disposed so as to engage the material in front of the needle. Said auxiliary feed dog is carried by a rod 22 which is mounted for reciprocation in the bearing lugs l6 and I7. Attached to the rod 22 at the forward end thereof is a bracket 23 and the auxiliary feed dog 2! is carried by a shank portion 24 which is secured to this bracket 23 by means of a clamping screw 25.
Mounted on the rod 22 is a sleeve 26 having a projecting arm 21 extending between guides, one of which is indicated at 28. The purpose of these guides is to hold the rod 22 to a right line move ment to prevent the feed dog from tilting to one side or the other. Attached to the sleeve 26 is a link 29 which in turn is secured to a stud 30 mounted for adjustment in a slot 3| carried by a bracket member 32 formed integral with the feed rocker. This stud is positioned as shown in Fig. l a greater distance radially from the center of the rod 20 than the pivotal connection of the main feed dog with said rocker and this is what imparts a differential movement to the feed dog 2| from the feed rocker which imparts the feeding movement to the feed dog It.
The feed bar I5 is raised and lowered by a link 33 which is connected to an arm 34 attached to a shaft 35 mounted for oscillation in suitable bearing lugs carried by the bed I of the machine. In overedge stitching a differential feed is preferred so that when working upon knit goods, for example, the fabric may be fed so as to avoid stretching of the same. When this machine is equipped for through and through stitching then the auxiliary feed dog may be omitted. Minor changes may be made, of course, in the feed bar so as to support and operate a single feed dog.
Projecting from the front wall 3 is a bracket 36 which may be formed integral therewith. Said bracket carries a sleeve bearing 31 and the needle bar 38 is mounted for reciprocation in this elongated sleeve bearing 37. The needle bar carries a needle 39 at the lower end thereof. Mounted in the housing is a main actuating shaft 40. Said shaft extends through the rear wall 2 of the housing to the front wall 3 thereof. In the front wall there is a suiiicient opening formed to receive a ball bearing consisting of an outer member 4i an inner member 42 and a series of balls 43. This ball bearing unit is secured in the opening in the Wall of the housing by means of a cap plate 44 which is attached to the wall by means of screws 45. In the rear of the wall 2 of the housing there is a similar ball bearing 8 for this main' actuating shaft. The main actuating shaft is driven by a belt wheel 41. This actuating shaft lies in a vertical plane cutting the line of feed at right angles. The bearings for the shaft are widely spaced so that the shaft is well supported adjacent the belt wheel 37 and also adjacent the other end thereof.
The shaft extends through the bearing in the wall 3 and carries on the outer end thereof a disk 48. Fixed to this disk 48 is a crank 4Q to which a link 50 is attached. This link 50 is connected at its upper end to a stud 5! carried by a block 52 which is fixed to the upper end of the needle bar. This provides a means for reciprocating the needle bar from the outer end of the shaft where in the connection to the needle bar is very close to theisupporting bearing for the end' of the shaft.
Cooperating with the needlebeneath the work support is a thread carrying looper 53. Said looper'53 is mounted on a-looper carrier 54. Said looperisheld on the looper carrier by means of a set screw 55.- The arm 54 is formed as an integral part of asleeve 56- which is clamped to a shaft 5'3. Said sleeve is split and isclamped to the shaft by a screw 58 passing through the split ends of the sleeve. The shaft 58 is journaled inbearing lugs 59 and 60 carried by the bed I. Said shaft extends through the bearing lug" 60 and is provided with an arm (ii. A link 62 is connected to said arm at its free end and said link is in turn pivoted to an arm 63 carried by a sleeve 64 mounted for oscillation on a shaft 65-. This shaft 65 extends through spaced bearing lugs 66;. 65 carried by the bed. There is a second arm- 61 carried by this sleeve 64 and said arm is provided with a ball stud 68.
Mounted in the upper portion of the housing is an auxiliary driving shaft 69. Said auxiliary driving shaft 69 is parallel with the main driving shaft 46- and is positioned close the same so that a gear T0 carried by the main actuating shaft will mesh directly with the gear ll carried by the auxiliary driving shaft and impart positive rotations thereto. The shaft 69 is mounted for rotation in a ball bearing 12 carried by therear wall 2 and also in a ball bearing 13- carried by the front; wall 3. It will be noted that the front wall 3 hasan offset portion therein (see Fig. 3). The shaft 69 extends through the front wall and carries a disk it on the end thereof which is outside of the housing. Mounted on this disk M is a crank pin 15 which can be shifted radially of the disk by means of an adjusting bolt 16. Cooperating with the crank pin is a link 17 which is pivoted at 18 to an arm 19 fixed to the feed rocker. Thus it is that this auxiliary shaft imparts oscillating movements to the feed rocker and the feed rocker imparts back and forth movements to the feed dogs.
Also mounted on this auxiliary shaft 69 is an eccentric with which an eccentric strap 88 cooperates. The eccentric strap 89 engages the ball stud 68. This provides a means whereby the rotations of the shaft 69 imparts oscillations to the sleeve 64 which in turn imparts oscillations to the shaft 53 and this moves the under looper 53 into and out of the needle thread loops.
The cross shaft 35 which raises and lowers the feed bar is mounted for oscillation at its inner end in a bearing lug 8!. Attached to this cross shaft is an arm 82 carrying a ball stud 83. On the main actuating shaft is an eccentric strap with which an eccentric strap 84 cooperates. Said eccentric strap 8d is attached at its lower end to this ball stud 83. Thus it is that the main actuating shaft oscillates the cross shaft and raises and lowers the feed bar and causes the feed dogs to be raised and lowered.
Cooperating with the needle and the under looper 53is an overedge looper 35. Said overedge looper 85 is attached to a looper carrier 86 by means of a set screw Bl. The looper carrier 86 is formed as a part of a sleeve which is mounted for oscillation on a shaft 88. Said shaft is mounted in the supporting brackets 6 and I.
Also formed as a partof the sleeve carrying the looper carrier is an arm 89. A link 96 is pivoted ofa sleeve 94 (see Fig-t4). The sleeve 94 is mounted on a studpincarried by the bearing lug B6. This-bearing lug'is integral with the bed and with the front wall 3. Also formed as a part of the sleeve 94 is an arm 95: carrying a ball stud 96'. On the main actuating shaft is an eccentric with which an eccentric strap 9''! cooperates. This eccentric: strap 91 is attached to this ball stud 96. Thus it is'- that the overedge looper is oscillated from the main actuating shaft.
It is desirable to trim the knitted fabric sectionswhicl'r are being over-edged and to this end a trimming blade 98 i's-provided. Said blade is mounted atthe outer end of a lever 99 which is attached to a sleeve H39 mounted for free oscillationin a shaft fill. The sleeve is held from endwise movement by the wall 3 of the housing and by a collar W2 which is fixe'dto the shaft. Mounted on the actuating shaft 60 is an eccentrio with which aneccentric'strap Hi3 cooperates. This eccentric strap H73 is connected to the lever 89 and imparts oscillations thereto. At the forspaced bearing collars I05 and I66. Extending through these collars is a rod N31 to which the trimming blade 98 is clamped. There is, of course, a cooperating ledger blade on the work support and the spring m8 holds the blade 98 in cooperative engagement therewith. This eccentric which oscillates the lever carrying the cutting blade: is mountedcl'ose to the bearing in the front wall 3 which supports the main actuating shaft.
The material is heldon the work support-by a presser' foot Hi9. Said presser foot is carried by a bar Hil which is fixed tothe shaft Hit. Attached to this shaft llll is an arm lll 'to which a treadle may .be connected for the raising'and lowering of the press'er foot. A plunger H2 mounted in the bracket 36 bears on the presser bar HE). A spring H4; in the sleeve bears against an adjustable abutment screw H5 at its upper end andagainst the plunger H2 at its lower end. This yieldingly forces the presser foot into engagement with the works In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. the machine is shown asequipped for" producing through and through stitches; that is, a straight line of stitching adjacent or back from the edge of the material. The stitch forming mechanism, except for the parts cooperating beneath the needle and the means for operating the same, issimilar to that already described and the same reference numerals have been applied tothe various parts.

The means for operating the feed bar is similar to that already described. Instead of illustrating, however, a differential feed; a single feed dog is shown and the means-for operating the same, it being understood that the differential feeding mechanism illustrated may, however, be used in connection with straight line stitching.
As illustrated in Figs; 5 and 6', the feeding mechanism includes a single feed dog I it, which is carried" by afeed bar H 1. This feed bar is pivoted to the'feedrocker H 3, which is mounted for oscillation on a: rod 26 carried by bearing lugs formed integral with the-supporting bed i. The feed. rocker is oscillated by the-link H from the auxiliary shaft 69 in the manner'described above. The feed bar I I1 is raised and lowered by a link 33 connected to an arm 34, which is oscillated by mechanism which is described above.

said thread carrying looper is attached to a looper carrier II9 which is mounted for oscillation on a supporting bracket I20, said bracket I20 is mounted on a shaft I2I carried in upstanding bracket members I22, I22. The looper carrier is oscillated on its supporting bracket by means of a link I26a; said link is pivoted at I24 to an arm I25 carried by a shaft I26 mounted in suitable bearing lugs carried by the frame I. Also mounted on the shaft I26 is an arm I2I carrying a ball stud to which an eccentric strap I28 is connected. This eccentric strap cooperates with an eccentric on the auxiliary shaft 69.
The looper support I2I is oscillated by means of an eccentric strap I29; said strap is connected to a ball stud at the outer end of an arm I30 which is fixed to the shaft. This eccentric strap I29 cooperates with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft 40.
It is noted that the looper derives one of its movements from the main actuating shaft, while the other movement imparted the looper is derived from the auxiliary shaft. This makes a very desirable distribution of the actuating parts and also enables a very short actuating shaft to be used.
Various formsof attachments may be used in connection with the stitching mechanism, which attachments are adapted to operate upon the edge portion of fabric sections. It will be noted that the material being stitched passes in a path parallel with the front wall of the housing and close to said front wall. One of the major loads imposed upon the actuating mechanism is that of reciprocating the needle bar which intermittently penerates the fabric. Any reaction to the needle in penetrating the fabric is taken by this bearing in the front wall and the front wall extends downwardly and is connected to the bed of the machine. Another major load on the actuating parts is the trimming of the fabric sections due to the intermittent action of the trimming blade contacting with and cutting the fabric. The impact or reaction from the cutting blade is imposed upon the actuating shaft close to the hearing in the front wall which, as noted, is directly connected to the bed beneath the same. The other major load upon the actuating parts is that of raising the feed dog which works against the heavy spring bearing on the presser foot. This is accomplished through the cross shaft connected to the eccentric strap 84 and operated by an eccentric on the main actuating shaft. The eccentric strap has a direct thrust on the arm carried by the cross shaft and the arm which is connected to the feed bar extends under the feed bar and is connected so as to impart a direct upward thrust thereon. This provides a very direct connection with little or no lateral thrust on the parts which are operated. The movement of the fabric by the feed dog imposes a load on the end of the auxiliary shaft close to the bearing which supports the same and this connection to the shaft is outside of the housing where it is very readily accessible for the adjustment of the stitch length. The minor loads on the actuating parts due to the operating of the loopers is obtained through eccentric straps which extend from the actuating shaft by the work support and the operating parts beneath the work support. These connections are all positive so that the parts are moved with little or no lost motion.
The gear walls I0 and II are mounted in an auxiliary chamber or housing formed as a part of the main housing. Extending from the rear wall 3 is .a wall 3 which extends beneath the gears andthence upward to the top or cap plate I of the machine. This provides a chamber H6 in which a lubricating oil may be placed for lubricating the gears.
It will be noted from the above description that a machine has been provided wherein there is a new type of frame for supporting the operating parts which consists of an integral bed and housing structure wherein the stitching point is close to the wall of the housing so that the actuating and actuated parts may be brought close to the cooperating elements working at the stitching point for the feeding and the stitching of the fabric sections. The actuating shaft for operating the machine positively imparts motion to an auxiliary actuating shaft both of which are located above the work support and very directly connected to the source of power which imparts rotation thereto. These shafts are very short and 20 the actuated members are so distributed on the two shafts that the lateral and endwise strains on said shafts are reduced to a minimum. These two shafts which actuate all of the operated parts are very directly connected tothe part which is 25 of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A sewing machine including a supporting frame, a work support, stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a main actuating shaft and an auxiliary actuating shaft located side by side above the work support and connected by gears for positive rotation, actuating members for part of the stitch forming mechanism and for part of the feeding mechanism carried by the main actuating shaft and actuating members for part of the stitch forming mechanism and for part of the feeding mechanism carried by said auxiliary actuating shaft.
2. A sewing machine including a supporting frame, a work support, stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch form- 55 ing means, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a main actuating shaft and an auxiliary actuating shaft located side by side above the work support and connected by gears for positive rotation, means operated from the end of the main (3 actuating shaft for reciprocating said needle, means operated from the end of the auxiliary actuating shaft for moving said feed dog back and forth, and other actuating members for the complemental stitch forming mechanism and for 0 raising and lowering the feed dog disposed in part on said main shaft and in part on said auxiliary shaft.
3. A sewing machine including a bed, a supporting frame carried thereby, a work support mounted on said bed and disposed at one side of said supporting frame, a main actuating shaft located above the work support, extending through said supporting frame and disposed substantially at right angles to a line of feed, an 7 auxiliary actuating shaft disposed above the work support, said shaft being parallel to said main actuating shaft and extending through said frame, gears for connecting said main actuating shaft and said auxiliary shaft, and stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, feeding mechanism including a feed dog, actuating members for part of the stitch forming mechanism and part of the feeding mechanism carried by the main actuating shaft, and actuating members for part of the stitch forming mechanism and part of the feeding mechanism carried by said auxiliary actuating shaft.

A sewing machine including a bed, a supporting frame carried thereby, a work support mounted on said bed and disposed at one side of said supporting frame, a main actuating shaft located above the work support, extending through said supporting frame and disposed substantially at right angles to a line of feed, an auxiliary actuating shaft disposed above the work support, said shaft being parallel to said main actuating shaft and extending through said frame, gears for connecting said main actuating shaft and said auxiliary shaft, and stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, and feeding mech anism including a feed dog, means connected to the end of the main actuating shaft outside of said frame for reciprocating the needle, means connected to the end of the auxiliary shaft outside of the frame for moving the feed dog back and forth, and other actuating members for the complemental stitch forming means for raising and lowering the feed dog disposed in part on said main actuating shaft and in part on said auxiliary shaft.

A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing theedge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, stitch forming mechanism including a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, and complemental stitch forming means cooperating with the needle, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, two synchronously rotating shafts disposed above the work support with their axes parallel, and devices operated by said shafts for imparting movement to the needle, the complemental stitch forming mechanism and to the feed dog.

A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, stitch forming mechanism including a needle, complemental stitch forming means cooperating with said needle, feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a
feed bar carrying said feed dog, two synchronously rotating shafts disposed above the work support and with their axes parallel, and devices actuatedby each of said shafts for operating part of the stitch forming -mechanism and part of the feeding mechanism.

A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a main actuating shaft carried by said frame and disposed above the work support in a line at right angles to a vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary actuating shaft connected by gears to said main actuating shaft, part of the actuating members for the stitch forming mechanism and the feeding mechanism being carried by the main actuating shaft and part of said actuating members being carried by said auxiliary shaft.

A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a main actuating shaft carried by said frame and disposed above the work support in a line at right angles to a Vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary actuating shaft connected by gears to said main actuating shaft, said main actuating shaft extending through the front wall, means carried at the end of said shaft for operating the needle, said auxiliary shaft extending through said front wall, means carried on the end of said shaft for imparting feed movements to the feed dog, the other actuating members for the feeding mechanism and the stitching mechanism being disposed in part on the main actuating shaft and in part on the auxiliary shaft.
9. A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support,
the face of said front wall, a main actuating,
shaft -located above the work support and extending through said rear wall and front wall of the housing, a supporting bearing in each wall for the shaft, a stitch forming mechanism including a needle bar, a needle carried thereby and complemental stitch forming means cooperating with said needle, an auxiliary shaft located above the work support and having its axis parallel with the main actuating shaft, means for rotating said auxiliary shaft from said main shaft, a disk on the end of said main shaft, and means carried by said disk connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same and devices operated in part by said main shaft and in part by said auxiliary shaft for imparting movements to said complemental stitch forming means.
10. A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a stitch forming mechanism including a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, devices cooperating with said needle to form overedge stitches, a main actuating shaft located above the work support and in a line at right angles to a vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary actuating shaft located adjacent to and parallel with said main actuating shaft and geared thereto for positive rotation, a feeding mechanism, and devices operated by said main actuating shaft for reciprocating the needle bar and for imparting movements to one of said devices cooperating with the needle, and devices operated by said auxiliary actuating shaft for operating the other of said devices cooperating with the needle.
11. A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front Wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a stitched forming mechanism including a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, devices cooperating with said needle to form overedge stitches, a main actuating shaft located above the work support and in a line at right angles to a vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary actuating shaft located adjacent to and parallel with said main actuating shaft and geared thereto for positive rotation, a feeding mechanism, devices operated by said main actuating shaft for reciprocating the needle bar and for imparting movements to one of said devices cooperating with the needle, devices operated by said auxiliary actuating shaft for operating the other of said devices cooperating with the needle, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a feed bar carrying said feed dog, devices operated from said main actuating shaft for raising and lowering said feed bar, and devices actuated from said auxiliary shaft for moving said feed bar back and forth.
12. A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a main actuating shaft mounted in said front wall and said rear wall above the work support and extending in a direction at right angles to a vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary shaft mounted in said front wall and said rear wall and disposed in a line parallel to and adjacent said main actuating shaft. means for rotating the auxiliary shaft from said main shaft, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, means on the end of the main actuating shaft for reciprocating said needle bar, a looper cooperating with the needle beneath the work support, a looper cooperating with said first named looper and with the needle above the Work support, an eccentric member on said main shaft between said walls, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper beneath the work support, an eccentric on the auxiliary shaft, and devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper cooperating with the needle above the work support.

A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear wall and a front wall, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a main actuating shaft mounted in said front wall and said rear wall above the work support and extending in a di- 5 rection at right angles to a vertical plane containing the line of feed, an auxiliary shaft mounted in said front wall and said rear wall and disposed in a line parallel to and adjacent said main actuating shaft, means for rotating the auX- 10 iliary shaft from said main shaft, a needle bar, a needle carried thereby, means on the end of the main actuating shaft for reciprocating said needle bar, a looper cooperating with the needle beneath the work support, a looper cooperating with said first named looper and with the needle above the work support, an eccentric member on said main shaft between said walls, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper beneath the Work support, an eccentric on the auxiliary shaft, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper cooperating with the needle above the work support, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a feed bar carrying said feed dog, an eccentric on the main actuating shaft, devices operated thereby for raising and lowering said feed bar, and devices connected to the end of' said auxiliary shaft for moving the feed bar back and forth.
14. A sewing machine including a supporting 30 frame, a work support, stitch forming mechanism including a needle, a looper cooperating with the needle beneath the work support, an overedge looper cooperating with the first named looper and the needle above the work support, a main actuating shaft, an auxiliary actuating shaft located above said work support and connected by gears for positive rotation, means operated from the end of the main actuating shaft for reciprocating the needle, an eccentric on said main: shaft between the front and rear walls, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper beneath the work support, an eccentric on said auxiliary shaft, and devices operated thereby for imparting oscillations to the overedge looper.

A sewing machine including a supporting frame, a work support, stitch forming mechanism including a needle, a looper cooperating with the needle beneath the work support, an overedge looper cooperating with the first named looper and the needle above the work support, a main actuating shaft, an auxiliary actuating shaft located above said work support and connected by gears for positive rotation, means operated from the end of the main actuating shaft for reciprocating the needle, an eccentric on said main shaft between the front and rear walls, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper beneath the work support, an eccentric on said auxiliary shaft, devices operated thereby for im- 60 parting oscillations to the overedge looper, a trimming mechanism including a movable trimming blade, an eccentric carried by said main actuating shaft, and devices operated thereby for reciprocating said trimming blade.
16. A sewing machine including a supporting frame, a work support, stitch forming mechanism including a needle, a looper cooperating with the needle beneath the work support, an overedge looper cooperating with the first named 70 looper and the needle above the work support, a main actuating shaft, an auxiliary actuating shaft located above said work support and connected by gears for positive rotation, means operated from the end of the main actuating shaft 75 for reciprocating the needle, an eccentric on said main shaft between the front and rear walls, devices operated thereby for oscillating the looper beneath the work support, an eccentric on said auxiliary shaft, devices operated thereby for imparting oscillations to the overedge looper, a
feeding mechanism including a feed dog, a main feed bar, a feed rocker having a forwardly projecting arm, an eccentric member carried at the end of said auxiliary shaft, a link connecting said member to the arm on the feed rocker, a cross shaft carried by the bed, a link connecting the arm on the cross shaft to the feed. bar for raising and lowering the same, an eccentric member on the main actuating shaft, and an eccentric strap cooperating therewith and connected to an arm carried by said cross shaft.
17. A sewing machine including a supporting bed, a housing rigidly attached thereto including a rear Wall and front wall and side walls, a work support carried by the bed and extending along the face of the front wall for supporting and directing the edge of the fabric which is to be stitched so that the line of feed is close to and parallel with the face of said front wall, a main shaft extending through said front and rear walls of the housing, ball bearings carried by the walls of said housing and supporting said shaft, an auxiliary actuating shaft extending through the front and rear walls of said housing, ball bearings at said front and rear walls for supporting said auxiliary shaft, a gear carried by said main shaft and meshing directly with the gear carried by said auxiliary shaft for imparting rotation thereto, said housing having auxiliary walls forming a lubricating chamber in which said gears are housed, a stitch forming mechanism including a needle and complemental stitch forming means, a feeding mechanism including a feed dog, part of the actuating members for the stitch forming mechanism and the feeding mechanism being carried by said main actuating shaft and part of said actuating members being carried 20 by said auxiliary actuating shaft.
