Abstract

<PICT:0780593/III/1> <PICT:0780593/III/2> <PICT:0780593/III/3> <PICT:0780593/III/4> In a method of making a hosepipe of the type comprising a woven jacket 10 and a watertight lining 11 of polyvinyl chloride compounded with an appropriate plasticiser, or a similar synthetic thermoplastic composition, and in the form of a thin tube, the tube is inserted into the jacket and forced tightly against the internal surface of the jacket by a fluid under pressure, and a heating medium is applied to the exterior of the jacket, the heat and pressure combining to cause the tube to adhere intimately with the jacket and set as a permanent flexible lining. The jacket may be woven seamless and be composed of cotton, flax or the polyester fibre known as "Terylene" (Registered Trade Mark), or either wholly or in part of cotton warps and wefts of "Terylene." The jacket or the tube, or both, may be coated with adhesive. Apparatus. An air heater 20 containing a shallow tunnel 21, the width of which is determined by the number of hose-pipes to be made at the same time, is provided with wheels 22 and runs on rails 23 between two headstocks 25, 26, the headstock 26 being movable along the rails. The fixed headstock 25 incorporates a winch 30, Fig. 4, including a cable drum 32 rotatable in both directions by an electric motor 33 through speed-reduction gearing 34 and change-speed gearing of the reversible and continuously variable type; a further cable drum 35 freely rotatable in bearings 36 is mounted on a fixed support 37. A cable 31 is led around both drums 32, 35 and attached to the heater so that the latter can be moved in either direction between the headstocks at any selected speed, and for automatically stopping the drive at each end of the range of such movement each headstock is equipped with a limit switch 38 projecting in the path of an associated striker 39 on the heater. The ends of the hoses are secured between bushes 42, Fig. 6, carried by a cross-bar 43, and tapered plugs 44, the plugs being mounted on the ends of tubes 45 slidably supported and provided with adjustable collars 46 engaged by toggle devices 47 so that the plugs may be forced into the ends of the hoses. Coupled to each tube 45 is an inlet pipe 50 connected through cocks 51 to a source 53 of compressed air which may be preheated. In an alternative arrangement, the heater is maintained stationary and the hose pipes moved relatively thereto. Specification 737,216, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
