Abstract
778,721. Continuous extraction of glue. ARMOUR & CO. April 22, 1954 [April 27, 1953], No. 11705/54. Class 121. In the continuous extraction of animal glue, pieces of conditioned water-impregnated glue, stock are fed into a rotating inclined drum 11 having perforations 14 which are smaller than the mean size of the pieces of stock ; and agitated with a substantially water-immiscible heat-transfer medium in the form of a liquid 13 kept, e.g. by a steam jacket 15, at glue-liberating temperature, e.g. between 55‹ and 65‹C. Pieces of stock reduced in size by the treatment pass, together with a concentrated aqueous solution of glue, through the perforations 14 to form with the liquid 13 a mixture which is drawn off into a centrifugal separator 17 from which spent stock is discharged at 18, concentrated glue solution is discharged at 19 and heattransfer liquid is discharged into a storage tank 21 from which it may be returned, e.g. together with fresh heat-transfer liquid, to the extraction, e.g., through a heater 23. The heat-transfer medium may be ethylene dichloride, carbontetrachloride, chloroform or kerosene. Fat extracted from the stock by the medium may be recovered. Alternatively, the heat-transfer medium may be fat of the kind contained in the stock. Excess fat which accumulates in the apparatus may be removed from the tank 21 or may overflow from an outlet 24. Specification 768,453 is referred to.
