Abstract
778,053. Removing metal by electrical discharge. SPARCATRON, Ltd. Oct. 23, 1953 [Sept. 11, 1952], No. 22835/52. Class 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] In working electrically-conductive material by electro-erosion or electrolysis a workpiece is supported for rotation between a rotating electrode and a support member or members and rotation of the workpiece is induced by rotation of the electrode or of the support member or members. In one embodiment a workpiece 1 is supported by rollers 6, 7. Roller 6 of insulating material is mounted on levers 8 and is urged by a spring 10 against a disc or cylinder electrode 2'so that the roller 6 and hence the workpiece are rotated. The insulated roller 7 is mounted on a lever 13, the position of which and thus of the workpiece is determined by the action of a solenoid 18, in the electrode-workpiece circuit, opposed by a spring 15. A spring-pressed bush 20 supplies current to the workpiece and a pipe 25 supplies dielectric fluid. The roller 7 may be inclined to traverse the workpiece and the position of the roller 7 may be regulated by a motor. The workpiece 1, Fig. 2, supported by an electric contact blade 31 may be rotated between a hollow electrode 32 having a porous or perforated non-conducting casing 33 which bears on the workpiece and a roller 30 driven at a lower peripheral speed than the electrode so that with the roller 30 surface having a higher friction co-efficient some slip occurs between electrode and workpiece resulting in abrasion. Electrolyte is fed to the hollow electrode to flow through the casing and is fed through the pipe 25. The electrode may comprise a pair of rollers in tandem, the workpiece being in contact therewith and axle or bearing journals may be machined by the method described. The use of spark and/or arc discharges is referred to. Specification 637,872 is referred to and Specifications 756,727, 780,242 are referred to in the Provisional Specifications.
