Abstract

777,927. Swaging non-metallic ductile material. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. June 15, 1954 [July 14, 1953], No. 19570/53. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXII] Solid and tubular workpieces made from stock of round cross-section of metallic or non- metallic materials, are shaped to non-circular uniform cross-section by feeding them through a stationary head swaging machine having radially acting dies which are so shaped that they squeeze the workpiece laterally without charging its cross-sectional area or producing any substantial elongation thereof. The swaging machine has a set of dies 1, Figs. 26, 27, mounted in a stationary head 2 and actuated by rollers 8 driven by driving pulley 6. Gripper jaws 11 mounted on a slide 12b, are closed by fluid pressure to grip the round tubular stock and feed it into the machine ; the slide is reciprocated longitudinally of the stock by fluid pressure motors 12, Fig. 28 (not shown). Further gripper jaws 11a similar to the jaws 11 are provided on the exit side of the machine. The jaws 11, 11a preferably work alternately and automatically so that the stock is moved continuously. Alternatively a screw or chain type feed mechanism may be provided or the stock may be fed manually. Various sets of jaws are shown for producing square, triangular, oval and aerofoil section hollow tubes from round tubular stock. In another form of swaging machine, Figs. 29, 30, the dies 2<SP>1</SP> mounted in a stationary head 1<SP>1</SP> are actuated by roller drums 6<SP>1</SP> mounted on driving shafts 8<SP>1</SP>. The drums carry rollers 7<SP>1</SP> which engage rollers 5<SP>1</SP> mounted on die heads 4<SP>1</SP> connected through shims 3<SP>1</SP> with the dies. Guide bushes 101, 11<SP>1</SP> are provided for the workpiece. The dies may alternatively be pressed inwardly by fluid pressure. The swaging may be performed hot or cold.
