Abstract

A composition suitable for making brake shoes for railway vehicles consists of: ..parts by ..weight .Phenol-formaldehyde resin.8-15 .Cast Iron chips.60-75 .Asbestos fibre.12-20 .Unvulcanized powdered Rubber. .(natural or synthetic).4-10 .Carbon black.0-10 The cast iron chips are such that they will pass through a screen with 1/4 in. mesh but not through one with 1/16 in. mesh. The ingredients are blended dry, formed in a mould under pressure, preheated to soften the resin, e.g. at 200 DEG -250 DEG F. for 30 minutes in an oven, or by, dielectric heating for 10 minutes at 200 DEG -300 DEG F. and then placed in a mould of the desired shape which is heated to 300 DEG -340 DEG F. and cured and compacted under pressure.
