Abstract

777,353. Coating with metals. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. July 1, 1954, No. 19343/54. Class 82(2) A finishing machine for use in the hot dip metallic coating of steel strip comprises one pair, at least, of pinch rolls disposed above the surface of the molten metal, one roll, at least, of said pair being of a material which is not wetted by the molten coating metal, and means for driving said pinch rolls at a peripheral speed equal to the strip speed, and in the direction of the strip travel. Galvanizing, terne coating and the production of tin-plate are referred to. As shown, strip 12 enters tin-bath 10 through hood 11, passes over a bottom roll 13 and thence upwardly through skimming rolls 14, said rolls 14 being of a material which is wetted by the molten metal and partially submerged therein. The strip then passes through pinch rolls 15 which remove excess coating metal. In modifications of the machine (a) a pair of pinch rolls, which are of material which is wetted by the molten metal, is added above the pinch rolls 15 (Fig. 2 not shown), (b) a casing containing oil and dipping into the tinbath, surrounds the entire machine (Fig. 3, not shown), (c) the further pair of rolls of modification (a) are provided with oilpans (Fig. 4, not shown) and (d) a hood containing inert gas and dipping into the tin-bath surrounds the entire machine (Fig. 5, not shown). After the coating operation, the tin-plate may be subjected to temperrolling. The wettable rolls may be made of high-carbon steel and the non-wettable rolls may be of stainless steel or chromiumplated; further, the rolls may be in the form of brushes made of non-wettable or wettable material.
