Abstract
776,938. Filters. ROSE, DOWNS & THOMPSON, Ltd. Sept. 7, 1955 [Sept. 8, 1954], No. 25985/54. Class 46. [Also in Group VI] Apparatus for filtration processes comprises a substantially enclosed vessel mounted to be rotatable about a horizontal longitudinal axis and provided with means for charging and discharging solids and for the supply and withdrawal of fluids, and a plurality of filter elements located in and projecting through the walls of the vessel, each filter element being mounted so as to ba individually detachable from the enclosed vessel. As shown, vessel 1 is provided with hollow tubular extensions 1a, 1b which are rotatable in bearings about a common axis. The vessel is double walled to form a jacket 1c and provided with coverable manholes 1d which pass through the jacket. Filter elements 6 pass through the jacket and project into the interior of the vessel, and each of these filter elements is readily detachable from the slot through which it is inserted. The filter elements are each attached to outlet pipes 9a each carrying an observation window 7 and a control valve. The outlet pipes connect with a main pipe 9 which is in turn connected via pipe 10 to an annular space 11a within a stuffing box 11, through which the member 1b passes. As vessel 1 rotates pipes 9 and 10 rotate with it, pipe 10 being always in communication with the space 11a, the box 11 being fixed. The space 11a communicates with pipe 11b for introducing solvent or live steam into, or withdrawing filtrate from, the vessel 1 through the filter elements 6. Similar stuffing boxes 12 and 13 are connected by pipes 14-15 to the jacket. Excess vapour within the vessel is allowed to escape by means of a fixed vapour conduit 16 and 16a. In operation slurry is passed into the vessel through the manholes and the solid-free liquid withdrawn through the filter elements under reduced pressure. In the event of any element 6 becoming clogged it can be isolated from pipe 9 and cleaned by counter-washing.
