Abstract

A petroleum fuel for internal combustion engines contains an additive capable of securing the deposition of a lubricating film upon the cylinder wall and upon the mechanical parts of the combustion chamber, by thermo-chemical reaction within the combustion chamber, this additive containing (a) an acetylenically unsaturated organic compound convertible under combustion conditions to material having lubricating properties and (b) a minor proportion of at least one compound chosen from metallic acetoacetate, enolates and amino-acetates, porphyrines and their metal derivatives, polyhydrocyclo-pentanophenanthrenes and their substitution derivatives, pyrrole and substituted pyrroles, dimethylanthraquinones and tetraphenylrubenes, the proportions of ingredients (a) and (b) being such that the greater part of the lubricating film is destroyed during the combustion phase following that in which it is formed. The petroleum fuel may be gasoline, while ingredient (a) may be a substance containing one or more acetylenic carbon-to-carbon linkages such as isonic or isonolic acid. In addition to being acetylenically unsaturated, ingredient (a) may contain one or more ethylenic linkages. Ingredient (b) may be haemin, chlorophyll, cholesterol, pyrrole, a methyl-substituted pyrrole, or a metallic (particularly copper, nickel, aluminium, chromium or cobalt) aceto-acetate, amino-acetate or enolate. An enolate is defined as an alcoholate of an enol form of a ketone or ester, and sodiumalonic ester is specified.
