Abstract

Adherent metallic salt is removed from Ti, V, Nb or Ta by leaching the metal with an aqueous medium incorporating a per-oxygen oxidizing compound but no extraneous acid, and then washing with a concentrated mineral acid. The term per-oxygen compound is defined as a compound having in its molecular structure the peroxide -O-O- bridge, and per-oxygen compounds referred to are hydrogen peroxide, metal e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal peroxides, per-sulphates, per-borates and ozone. The leaching step is repeated with fresh leaching medium until all the salt is removed and the acid washing step is followed by a washing with water.
