Abstract

A composition comprises 0.01 to 2 per cent of a fatty acid cationic amine lubricant for glass fibres, 0.25 to 5 per cent of a polyvinyl acetate resin, and 0.01 to 1 per cent of a silane having from 1 to 3 hydrolysable groups and a straight chain, unsaturated organic group of less than 8 carbon atoms, said silane having been dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone, and the solution then dispersed at below 60 DEG F. in an aqueous medium and the pH optionally adjusted to 3.3 \sB 0.3, prior to combination with the other ingredients. The pH of the final dispersion may be adjusted to 5.5 \sB 0.5 by means of ammonium hydroxide or acetic acid. The resin may be added as a dispersion and specified are polyvinyl acetate and vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers, optionally containing plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate. The silane, which forms polysiloxanes when the compositions are set, e.g. by heating, may be vinyltrichlorosilane, divinylchlorosilane, allyldichlorosilane or vinyldiethoxysilane. Lubricants disclosed are pelargonic acid-tetraethylene pentamine condensate, didodecylammonium chloride, ditalloammonium chloride and complexes and salts thereof, and these are preferably added in organic acid solution of pH 6.3 \sB 0.3. The compositions are useful for treating glass fibres used in the reinforcement of plastics such as laminates, and in the manufacture of coated fabrics from strands or yarns.ALSO:Glass fibres are coated with a composition comprising 0.01-2 per cent of a fatty acid cationic amine lubricant, 0.25-5 per cent of a polyvinyl acetate resin and 0.01-1 per cent of a silane having 1-3 hydrolysable groups and a straight-chain, unsaturated organic group of less than 8 carbon atoms, said silane having been dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone, and the solution having been dispersed at below 60 DEG F. in an aqueous medium before combination with the other ingredients. The pH of the final dispersion may be adjusted to 5.5 \sB 0.5 by means of ammonium hydroxide or acetic acid. Resins specified are polyvinyl acetate and vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers, optionally containing plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, and the silane, which forms polysiloxanes when the compositions are set, may be vinyltrichlorosilane, divinylchlorosilane, allyldichlorosilane or vinyldiethoxysilane. Lubricants specified are pelargonic acid-tetraethylene pentamine condensate, di(dodecyl)-ammonium chloride, di(tallo)ammonium chloride and complexes and salts thereof. The glass may be processed into strands or yarns and into woven or knitted fabrics, and may also be used in the reinforcement of plastics, e.g. in laminates, and the manufacture of coated fabrics.
