Abstract

776,167. Valves. PHILLIPS TELESCOPIC TAPS, Ltd. July 4, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 20648/54. Class 135. A telescopic tap comprises a bearing sleeve 2, Fig. 1, fixed in the wall of a container, a pouring tube 3, Fig. 3, axially slidable in the sleeve 2 and having an outlet 4, a sleeve valve 5, Fig. 5, slidably mounted in the pouring tube 3, and a spring catch device fixing the sleeve valve 5 to the pouring tube 3 when the outlet 4 is closed by the valve, and means for operating the catch to release the valve from the pouring tube and anchor the valve in a stationary position when the pouring tube is partially withdrawn so that the pouring tube can be further withdrawn to open the outlet, the catch again locking the valve to the pouring tube on its return movement. With the ring 15 on the pouring tube sealing on the flange 1 on the sleeve 2, the valve 5, in the form of a longitudinally split spring cylinder is held within the pouring tube by means of lugs 8, 12 on the tube engaging slots 9a, 13 respectively in the-valve, the left-hand end of which covers the opening 4. On pulling the tube and valve outwardly through the sleeve 2, an outwardly bent cam portion 10 on the valve engages a cam slot 11 on the sleeve 2. This flexes the valve 5 so that the lug 8 rides out of the slot 9a into the slot 9 whereby the tube 3 may further be pulled outwardly with the lugs 8, 12 moving in slots 9, 13 so that the outlet 4 is moved beyond the left-hand end of the valve 5 which is now locked to the sleeve 2 by the slot 11. On pushing the pouring tube inwardly the hole 4 is again covered by the valve, the cam 10 is unlocked from the slot 11 and the valve flexes to re-engage the slot 9a on the lug 8. With the pouring tube pushed fully inwards the end 6a of a spline 6 on the tube leaves a sleeve slot 7 and may be turned to engage a cam 14 on the sleeve 2-to force the sealing ring 15 on the flange 1.
