Abstract
776,029. Mass spectrometers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 15, 1955 [Feb. 15, 1954], No. 4518/55. Class 39(1). A mass spectrometer with a multiple thermionic ion specimen source includes a rotatable carrier 17, Figs. 2, 4, and a plurality of filaments 25 supported individually in holders 19 which are detachably located around the periphery of the carrier. Each holder 19 consists of an insulating block and end plates 21, 23 which support the filament and provide the electrical contacts. Connection to the top and plate is made by an assembly 63 which includes a leafspring 4, Fig. 2, and to the bottom plate by a contact 58 at the end of a pivoted plate 48. Each insulating block has a transverse slot 33, Fig. 2, to prevent deposited metal from short circuiting the end plates. The slot 33 opens into a hole 35, Fig. 4. The carrier is rotated by a rack and pinion 76 which is operated by means of a shaft 26 and bellows 22. In another embodiment the carrier is rotated by means of bevel gears. Pivoted plate 48 has a tapered hole 46 for engaging the carrier shaft, and is actuated by means of shaft 64 and bellows 68 to lock the carrier and to force electrical contact 58 into engagement with the end plate of the filament holder. The filament is aligned with slits in the focusing and accelerating electrodes, Figs. 3, 4. These electrodes are supported and spaced by insulating spacers 99. Beam centering plates 77, 79 are mounted on electrodes 65, 69.
