Abstract

Copolymers of a conjugated diene, methyl isopropenyl ketone and vinyl pyridine are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, e.g. potassium persulphate, an emulsifier, e.g. sodium hydroxide and sodium oleate and, if desired, a modifier such as tertdodecyl mercaptan. The copolymer may be used as an adhesive in admixture with a phenolic resin, e.g. as an aqueous dispersion. The diene may be butadiene and the phenolic resin, a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. The adhesive composition may be used for bonding polyester or polyamide resin type cords.
