Abstract

1406051 Butadiene/styrene/vinylpyridine copolymer DUNLOP Ltd 6 Dec 1972 [13 Jan 1972] 1765/72 Heading C3P In a process for the production of a butadiene styrene/vinyl pyridine copolymer latex in the presence of a molecular weight regulator, a soap solution, an auxiliary dispersing agent and a free-radical initiator at a temperature of 50- 70‹ C., at least 50% of each monomer, 50-90% of the molecular weight regulator and part of the soap solution are added gradually to an initial reaction mixture of the other ingredients. The molecular weight regulator may be n- or t-dodecyl mercaptan or mixed C 12-16 t-mercaptans. The reaction is preferably short-stopped at a solids content of 20-50%. The latex may be stabilized, e.g. with potassium oleate and urea, and combined with resorcinol and formaldehyde to form a latex dip for bonding tyre cords to rubber.
