Abstract

775,513. Venting fuel tanks in aircraft. AERO SUPPLY MFG. CO., Inc. March 30, 1955, No. 9303/55. Class 4. [Also in Group XXIX] A vent valve for a fuel tank comprises float-actuated valve means for venting the tank in a normal horizontal position and gravity-actuated means for holding the valve means closed when the tank is inverted. The vent valve may also have means active under centrifugal force for holding the valve means closed. When the float 39 is lowered it turns a lever 29 hinged at 31 so that valves 27, 28 move up and down respectively to vent the tank through the pipe 21. Should the tank become inverted a bent arm 43 carrying a weight 44 and hinged 31 moves to contact a pin on the member -29 and closes both valves. A further arm 49 pivoted at 31 and carrying a weight 50 moves to the right under centrifugal force to contact the pin and close both valves thus preventing a surge of liquid escaping into the vent pipe. The valves 27, 28 may be replaced by a double beat lift valve or a combined lift and piston valve moving over a ported cylindrical seat. The valve 28 may have its seat carried by a dished washer spring to compensate for bending of the member 29 under load, while the valve 27 may be a lift valve combined with a surrounding flexible seat member so that when the lift valve first opens the pressure acts upon a larger area to give quick movement to full opening. The hinged valves may be balanced, or unbalanced to open on excessive pressure when the float is immersed. A lightly loaded hinged check valve 58 on housing 20 opens into the tank if the tank pressure falls.
