Abstract

Self-lubricating stuffing box packings are obtained by mixing 20-20 per cent of asbestos with 5-15 per cent of ground polishing agent of almost colloidal fineness, agitating in a drum and then adding 40-65 per cent of powdery lubricating minerals which are absorbed and bound to the asbestos. Specified polishing agents are soot, smoke black, retort carbon powder and ground glass, whilst lubricating minerals are graphite, talcum, stearite, oil, shale or their admixtures. Water glass, which may be diluted with water and/or formaline to which methyl alcohol and glycerine can be added, may be admixed with the packing.
