Abstract
Liquid fuel, such as oil or oil-coal mixtures, have stabilized therein by starch or casein a combustion-controlling agent insoluble in oil or water. Up to 10 per cent of water may be added. In oil-coal mixtures the coal suspension may be stabilized by the same starch or casein, and sodium chloride may be added to facilitate the ignition of the coal particles. Naphthalene may be used as a "cut-back," and mixing is preferably effected by a high-speed attrition mill. Combustion-controlling agents specified are boron compounds, e.g. boro-tungstates, boro-silicates, calcium borate, aluminium borate; iron oxides, (Fe2O3 or Fe3O4), aluminium chloride; powdered nickel or cobalt. In an example, 40 lb. of coal passing a 200 mesh screen is stabilized in 55 lb. of petroleum oil by 0,2 gm. of casein in 96 gm. of water, and 1,0 per cent of borosilicate is added. 0,25--0,375 per cent of sodium chloride may also be added. Specifications 403,770, 408,951, and 434,180 are referred to.
