Abstract

The invention relates to salts of penicillin V (phenoxymethyl penicillin) with tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracylcine. The salts are prepared by reacting penicillin V with the tetracycline in an organic or aqueous organic solvent e.g. dimethyl formamide, an alcohol, ether ketone, ester or chloro compound. Alternatively, a soluble salt of penicillin V may be reacted with a soluble salt of the tetracycline in the presence of water, a water-miscible solvent or other medium in which the initial salts are soluble and in which the salt formed is insoluble or may be made insoluble by the addition of a suitable diluent. The salts have a wider antibacterial spectrum than the parent materials and have a depot effect when injected (see Group VI). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,779.ALSO:Salts of penicillin V (phenoxy methyl penicillin) with tetracycline, oxytetracycline or chlortetracycline (see Group IV(b)), which have a wider antibacterial spectrum than the parent materials and a depot effect when injected, are incorporated into a solid or liquid pharmaceutical carrier. Tablets or powders are prepared with diluents such as starch, lactose, talc, stearic acid, magnesium stearate and gums. Injections are prepared with liquid diluents such as water. The salts may be put up in capsule form. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,779.
