Class 100(3) A matrix for use in a type-casting machine is provided with parallel grooves b, Fig. 1, between which the engraving c is situated, and metal strips inserted in the grooves to. form substantially vertical sides to the engraved recesses. The 'strips are secured by pins through holes f. In another form, Fig. 5, a second pair of strips h are inserted at right-angles in deeper grooves, and have recesses to receive the strips d, the strips forming four sides of the engraved recesses.
