Abstract
774,224. Fastenings; cotters. PERKS & SON (FORGINGS), Ltd., J. Dec. 9, 1955 [Dec. 11, 1954], No. 35930/54. Classes 44 and 89 (2). A fastening device for hinged drop-sides or tail boards of vehicles, or other hinged parts. of the kind comprising a peg or projection 3, Figs. 2 and 4, adapted to be secured to a fixed pillar 5 of a vehicle or some other fixed part, and to be engaged by an eye or staple 9 on a drop-side or tail-board 2 or other hinged part, a captive locking bar or cotter 10 being loosely retained between the sides of a forked outer portion of the peg or projection 3 and the bar or cotter 10 being movable from the position shown in Fig. 4, in which the eye or staple 9 is allowed to pass over the peg or projection 3 to a locking. position, Fig. 2, in which it holds the eye or staple in place on the peg or projection is characterized in that the bar or cotter 10 is supported in the position shown in Fig. 4 by having a notch 15 in its lower edge 11 engaging over a transverse pin or member 8 between the sides of the forked end of the peg 3 and when moved to its locked position the cotter 10 is disposed between the pin 8 and the end wall 17 of the slot 7 in the peg 3. Referring to Fig. 4, the cotter is prevented from clockwise rotation by a corner 16 engaging the wall 17 and upward movement of the cotter is prevented by a shoulder 18 abutting the pin 8. Displacement of the cotter from the peg in a vertical direction is prevented by the shoulder 18 or a shoulder 11d on the cotter engaging the pin 8. The peg may have a screwed shank and be secured to the tail-board by a nut instead of being riveted thereto as. shown. Moreover, in a modification the cotter may have an enlarged head to prevent downward displacement from the peg and at its inner end a transverse pin, the opposite ends of which are engageable with recesses in the lower edges of the side walls of the forked portion of the peg.
