Abstract

A jet fuel composition comprises a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons suitable for use as a fuel in a jet engine and a fluorocarbon which is either an aliphatic fluorocarbon having 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the molecule or an aromatic - aliphatic or alicyclic - aliphatic fluorocarbon having a molecular weight of at least 600, in which more than half the number of carbon atoms is present in the form of a completely fluorinated open chain aliphatic radical. The preferred flurocarbons are those obtained by completely fluorinating a light hydrocarbon distillable fraction such as a kerosene or light lubricating oil. The fluorocarbon may have a boiling point between 20 DEG C. and 240 DEG C. at 10 millimetres of mercury absolute pressure, preferably a mixture of fluorocarbons, one portion boiling between 20 DEG C. and 130 DEG C. and another portion boiling between 130 DEG C. and 240 DEG C., the pressure being as above. The fuel oil may contain 0.0001 to 1 per cent by volume of the fluorocarbon. The mixture of liquid hydrocarbons may have a Reid vapour pressure above 0.5 pounds per square inch at 100 DEG F. The fuel may also have added to it a dispersing or solubilizing agent, which may be an alicyclic fluorocarbon such as perfluoro-methylcyclohexane or perfluorodimethylcyclohexane, an aromatic fluorocarbon; a compound obtained by reacting a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon with a fluorocarbon, e.g. by reacting an aliphatic amine with a fluorocarbon or a perfluoro - fatty acid or alcohol; an ester of polyoxyalkylene sorbitol; a fatty acid partial ester of sorbitol, or polyoxyalkylene derivative thereof; dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate or a sulphated fatty alcohol. Corrosion inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, gum inhibitors and combustion chamber deposit inhibitors may also be added. Examples of fuel compositions are given.
