Abstract

A fluent coating composition for protecting metals against corrosion comprises a mixture consisting of 1 to 5 per cent of tall oil by volume, a petroleum residuum from straight run distillation of a naphthene base crude oil, the residuum having a Saybolt-Furol viscosity of 40 to 45 seconds at 210 DEG F., and sufficient petroleum oil capable of cutting back the residuum to give the mixture a Saybolt-Furol viscosity of 25 to 50 seconds at 122 DEG F., together with an aliphatic diamine. The diamine may be of the formula R.NH.CH2.CH2.CH2.NH2, where R is an alkyl group having 8 to 18 carbon atoms, and may represent a mixture of groups derived from tallow fatty acids. The diamine may be present in an amount of up to 4 per cent by weight, on the basis of the remaining constituents. Small quantities of an isobutylene polymer or of an oxidized wax fraction may be present. The composition may be applied to the inner surface of a metal tank by floating it as a uniform layer, contacting the confining surfaces of the tank at its margins, upon the surface of water contained in the tank, and effecting relative movement between the surface of the water and the walls of the tank, as by pumping additional water into the tank, or by draining it. Corrosion tests on metal panels coated with the compositions are described.
