Abstract

774,008. Making heat-exchanging sheets; stamping; rolling; welding by pressure. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and MANNING, I. Oct. 17, 1955 [Sept. 17, 1954], No. 26979/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In making metal elements with passages therein by cold pressure welding, e.g. by rolling together metal sheets with stop weld material therebetween where the passages are to be located, the material is an organic polymeric material containing no elements other than carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and which on heating to a temperature between the temperature of pressure welding and the melting temperature of the metal changes into the gaseous state without leaving a residue and the sheets are subsequently heated to gasify the material. The material may be in the form of a thin sheet or film but preferably a solution or liquid dispersion of the material is printed on one of the sheets and dried. In examples, an aqueous dispersion of polymerized ethylene which may be stabilized by an amine stearate type of emulsifying agent, a solution of methyl methacrylate polymer in benzyl alcohol or a solution of poly-iso-butylene in tetra-hydronaphthalene may be applied by the silk screen process and dried under infra-red radiation. The pressure created by the gasifying of these materials may be used to expand the passages, or the gas may be allowed to escape and the passages subsequently expanded by hydraulic pressure.
