Abstract

Transfer printing with sublimable colourants is effected by interposing an unpigmented colourless resin between the support material to be coloured and the sheet carrying the colourant. The resin can be applied to the support before transfer printing e.g. only to the parts requiring to be coloured, except for a slight overlap. It can be applied by a separate heat transfer step using an intermediate support previously covered with resin. Alternatively, it can be applied to the sheet carrying the sublimable colourants, printing being carried out in a single operation. Polymerisation of the resin can be effected at the same time as the transfer printing. If an intermediate sheet is used, it can be hydrophobic or very slightly hydrophilic, and the same sheet can be used several times. The process can be used on supports with surfaces of varying kinds, being partic. adapted for use with textile materials made from natural cellulosic fibres such as cotton, or with PVC plastic.
