Abstract

14-Bromocodeinone is manufactured by reacting thebaine with an N-bromoamide or an N-bromoimide, advantageously in the presence of a ketone or an aqueous solution thereof and at a temperature below 30 DEG C. (e.g. 10-20 DEG C.). In examples, thebaine is treated at 15-18 DEG C. with: (1) N-bromosuccinimide in aqueous acetone; (2) N-bromoacetamide in aqueous acetone; (3) N-bromophthalide in aqueous methyl ethyl ketone. Reference is also made to the use of N-bromopropionamide and N-bromoglutarimide, and, as solvents, diethyl, methyl n-propyl, methyl heptyl and methyl isobutyl ketones and cyclohexanone, in aqueous solution.
