Abstract

An hydraulic fluid composition comprises a blend of 70 to 1 per cent by weight of a liquid polysiloxane with 30 to 99 per cent by weight of a liquid chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbon. The polysiloxane may contain alkyl groups such as methyl, ethyl, butyl and octadecyl; aryl groups such as phenyl, xenyl and naphthyl; aralkyl groups such as benzyl; alkaryl groups such as tolyl and xylenyl; alicyclic groups such as cyclohexyl; and halophenyl groups, such as m - trifluoromethylphenyl, 3 - trifluoromethyl - 4-chlorophenyl, m-chloro- or m-bromo-phenyl, p-chloro- or p-bromo-phenyl, and 3:4-dichlorophenyl. The preferred polysiloxanes contain all methyl groups, or methyl groups and a minor proportion of phenyl groups or halophenyl groups as above. The chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbons may contain halogen atoms substituted in the nucleus or in one or more alkyl groups attached to the nucleus. Suitable chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbons are 2-, 3-and 4-chloro-trifluoromethyl benzenes, 3 : 4-dichloro-trifluoromethyl benzene, 4-chloro-1 : 3-(trifluoromethyl) benzene, and 2-chloro-1 : 4-bis (trifluoromethyl) benzene. A mixture of dichloro-trifluoromethyl benzenes with a minor proportion of trichloro trifluoromethyl benzenes, is preferred. Corrosion inhibitors and antioxidants may be included in the compositions; the composition may also include a mineral oil or synthetic ester lubricant. Examples of compositions are given.ALSO:A hydraulic fluid composition having lubricating properties comprises a blend of 70 to 1 per cent by weight of a liquid polysiloxane with 30 to 99 per cent by weight of a liquid chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbon. The polysiloxane may contain alkyl groups such as methyl, ethyl, butyl and octadecyl; aryl groups such as phenyl, xenyl and naphthyl; aralkyl groups such as tolyl and xylenyl; alicyclic groups such as cyclohexyl; and halophenyl groups, such as m - trifluoromethyl phenyl, 3 - trifluoromethyl - 4 - chlorophenyl, m - chloro - or m - bromo-phenyl, p - chloro- or p - bromo-phenyl, and 3 : 4 - dichlorophenyl. The preferred polysiloxanes contain all methyl groups, or methyl groups and a minor proportion of phenyl groups or halophenyl groups as above. The chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbons may contain halogen atoms substituted in the nucleus or in one or more alkyl groups attached to the nucleus. Suitable chlorofluoro aromatic hydrocarbons are 2 -, 3 - and 4 - chlorotrifluoromethyl benzenes, 3 : 4 - dichlorotrifluoromethyl benzene, 4 - chloro - 1 : 3 - bis (trifluoromethyl) benzene, and 2 - chloro - 1 : 4 - bis (trifluoromethyl) benzene. A mixture of dichloro - trifluoromethyl benzenes with a minor proportion of trichloro trifluoromethyl benzenes, is preferred. Corrosion inhibitors and anti-oxidants may be included in the compositions; the composition may also include a mineral oil or synthetic ester lubricant. Examples of compositions are given.
