773,417. Bending, tempering and cutting glass. LIBBEY - OWENS - FORD GLASS CO. Jan. 31, 1955, No. 2771/55. Class 56 A method of bending glass sheets, annealing them and subsequently pattern-cutting them, particularly for vehicle windscreens, comprises bending the heated blank while on a former and controlling the cooling of the bent sheet during annealing so as to' create areas of tension and compression in the sheet and then pattern-cutting it along a line such that the whole or at least some portion or portions, of the peripheral edge of the pattern-cut bent sheet is/are in compression. In Fig. 8 the compression zones 31 in two sheets 10, 11 bent together, along which zones the cuts are to be made are formed by a baffle plate 23 within and spaced from the peripheral member 16 of the bending frame, the portions c, d of the sheets above members 16, 23 being in tension. In Fig. 9 the compression bands 34 are formed by positively cooling, by means of coolers 37, the bending frame members 33 during annealing.
