Abstract

845,962. Bending glass sheets. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 17, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1955], No. 25193/56. Class 56. In the bending of glass sheets particularly for vehicle " wrap-around " windshields and backlights wherein the top of the main portion between the wrap-around wing-bends is bent transversely to merge into the roof, intense heat is imparted to the strip of the main portion of the glass (i.e. that on the stationary centre member of the three-part mould) along which the transverse bend is to be made. The centre mould member includes a smoothly curved side rail 32, Fig. 4, and a reversely curved side rail 30 adjacent which the transverse bend is to be made. The rail 30 is provided with an upwardly and outwardly directed sheet 130 of heat-reflecting material to help to support the glass sheet and to direct heat in the bending lehr on to the strip of glass in which the transverse bend is to be made. In addition to the means for reflecting heat to the strip, direct electric heating means therefor may be carried by the mould M itself. These may be in the form of resistances R, Fig. 8, carried by a framework and connected to contacts 76 which engage bus-bars 158 in the lehr L. In one form the reversely-bent side rail of the centre mould section may be rotated, after the strip of glass has been sufficiently heated, to effect the transverse bend. A foraminous heat-absorbing member in the form of a mesh screen may extend partially across the glass from the smoothly-curved side rail of the centre mould section. Specifications 768,982, 820,809, 845,961, 845,963, 845,964 and 845, 965 are referred to.
