Abstract
739,427. Tempering glass sheets. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. Feb. 10, 1954 [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 3947/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 56. In the manufacture of tempered curved glass sheets having one or more portions less tempered or not tempered at all, in particular for vehicle windscreens, the flat glass sheet is uniformly heated over its whole area to the softening temperature and is then curved, e.g. by sagging on to an appropriately shaped former or by engagement between concave and convex shaping members. The parts to be less or not tempered are then masked on both faces by removable screens while the sheet retains all or part of the heat received for the curving and the remainder is then tempered by adjusting the heating and/or cooling so that the masked parts are at a temperature not greater than that of the surrounding zone when the latter congeals during the cooling. Two main forms of apparatus are described. In one, after the glass has been curved without the masks, it is cooled (e.g. by exposure to air) substantially to congealing point, the masks are then applied, the sheet reheated, and then subjected to rapid cooling to temper the non-masked portion. In the other, after the sheet has been curved without the masks, cooling screens are placed over the parts to be less or untempered and the temperature of the remaining portion of the sheet is maintained until after the screened portions have cooled sufficiently whereupon the unscreened portion is tempered by rapid cooling. In both forms the screens may be left in masking position during the final rapid cooling. In the first form, after the sheet has been curved and the masks applied, before the assembly is passed to the rapid cooler it may again pass through the shaping members, or between auxiliary shaping members, to correct any irregularities in the shape that may have occurred during the end portion of the heating. Specification 704,312 is referred to.
