Abstract
Foamed polyester-polyisocyanate resins are made by cooling a polyester having dispersed within it water necessary for the subsequent formation of carbon dioxide to a temperature below that at which carbon dioxide is subsequently evolved, mixing said polyester at said temperature with a separately cooled polyisocyanate and subjecting the mixture to a temperature high enough to effect said reaction. The specified polyester is derived from ethylene glycol and adipic acid and may be modified by a small proportion of a bi-functional amino compound, e.g. monoethanolamine and ethylene diamine. Specified polyisocyanates are toluene- 2 : 4 - diisocyanate and toluene - 2 : 6 - diisocyanate. Suitable catalysts for the reaction are the N-alkyl substituted morpholines, e.g. N-methyl morpholine. Dispensing agents specified are the alkylene oxide derivatives of long chain fatty acids. In the examples, a mixture of a polyester derived from ethylene glycol and adipic acid, N-methyl morpholine, water and a dispensing agent is mixed with toluene-2 : 4-diisocyanate at a temperature of: (I) - 50 DEG F; (II) - 10 DEG F.; (III) - 50 DEG C.; (IV) - 10 DEG F.
