Class 100(2) A metal band which is printed on at a plurality of successive printing stations (e.g. in multi-colour printing) and heated after each printing to dry the colour, is subjected to a controlled cooling operation after each heating operation so as to be given a constant predetermined temperature over the length to be printed before entering each printing station, to avoid variations in length and ensure correct registration. Preferably the temperature of the band is the same at each station, in which case the diameters of the printing rollers would be the same. The band may be heated or cooled to a predetermined temperature before entering the station. Cooling may be by passing over cooling roolers or by air-cooling.
