Abstract
Alkoxy benzene sulphonium salts are made by reacting sulphur dioxide, thionyl chloride, a chloride of a benzene sulphinic acid or a phenyl sulphoxide, in the presence of aluminium chloride, with an alkoxy benzene reaction being effected in a solvent, such as benzene, toluene or xylene, which is inert to the reactants and products, the amount of catalyst present being such that no substantial reaction with the solvent is possible. The sulphonium salts are obtained to a very high percentage in the strongly basic form. A reaction temperature of 5 DEG C. and below is preferred. In an example, anisole is treated with sulphur dioxide at below 4 DEG C. in the presence of toluene and AlCl3 to yield trianisyl sulphonium chloride. Specification 752,076 is referred to.
