Abstract
772,360. De-burring- holes in metal articles. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO (1938), Ltd. jan. 10, 1955 [Jan. 21, 1954; April 5, 1954], Nos. 1825/54 and 9889/54. Class 60 Holes in metal articles e.g. tubular articles such as flame tubes are de-burred by subjecting the articles to movement in contact with abrasive particles, grits, pebbles or the like simultaneously with the application of a spray,or drip-feed of water or other dust-allaying liquid and coolant. Apparatus comprises a fixed housing 24, Fig. 1, through the top of which water trickles from supply 25, a drain-off 26 being provided. Within the housing and secured to shaft 27 is a container 28 having a number of compartments 29 with perforated walls. A flame tube may be fixed within each compartment and filled with pebbles. Each end of the shaft 27 is mounted in a sleeve 30 carried on the top of a spindle 31 mounted eccentrically in :a vertical shaft 32. The shafts 32 are driven by motor 33 through chain gearing, with the result that any point on the shaft 27 moves in a circular orbit in a horizontal plane. The shaft 27, is rotated by a motor 37 through belt gearing. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 5, a shaft 3 is mounted for oscillation and reciprocation in bearings 2 on a frame 1. The flame tube 5 is clamped on the projecting end 4 of the shaft by jaws on a spider 6 fixed to the shaft and jaws 9 on a spider 8 adjustable along the end 4 of the shaft. Two arms 10 are provided on the shaft 3; a sleeve 12 carried by trunnions 11 mounted in the ends of the arms receive rotatably a crank pin 13 on a member 14 driven by belt 16 from a motor. Pebbles are placed in the flame tube 5. A water sprayer 16a is provided; a cup 19 traps moisture creeping along the shaft. The shaft extension 4 may be enclosed within a vessel to receive drainings, this vessel draining into a tank 20. For treating' the exterior of the tube, an openbottom casing 21, Fig. 7, is saddled on top of the tube 5 and contains pebbles resting on the tube. If the pebbles have been screened so that they are too large to pass through the holes both, the exterior and interior of the tube may be treated simultaneously; if smaller pebbles are present, the exterior and interior are treated separately, an interior shroud or liner 23 being used when treating the exterior and an exterior shroud or liner being used when treating the interior. The shaft 3 may be given an intermittent inching rotation.
