Valve rockers 31 are pivoted on supports 32 mounted in bosses 48 on the outer wall 29 of a water jacketed cylinder head which is reinforced by a beam 52 integral with the wall 29 and supported by columns 53 integral with the beam and extending between the inner and outer cylinder head walls 29, 46 immediately above the walls of the cylinder cooling jacket 23 at the parts thereof between the upper ends of adjacent cylinders. Each support 32 comprises a stud 47 press-fitted into a boss 51 and provided with a hemispherical bearing member 49 against which the rocker 31 bears, the member 49 being secured by a nut 48 which screws up against a conical portion 61 of the stud 47 serving to provide correct location of the nut 48 and member 49. Each rocker 31 is formed of sheet metal and is provided with recesses engaging the member 49 and the end of a push rod 24. Lubricating oil is supplied through the rod 24 to lubricate the bearing surface between the push rod and rocker, some of the oil flowing through a port 72 into the rocker to lubricate the bearing 49. Oil accumulating in the rocker splashes over a flange 56 on the rocker to lubricate the valve stem 33. The oil is supplied to the push rod 24 from a passage 68, Fig. 1, under the control of a recess 65 in the tappet 21. The rockers 31 may also be lubricated by oil supplied to the interior of the beam 52 and through passages in the stud 47 to the member 49. Excessive lateral displacements of the rockers 31 is prevented by a guide member 63, Figs. 1 and 4, attached to the rocker base cover 27 and provided with notches 64 closely surrounding the flange 56 on the rockers 31. Vibration damping sleeves 60 are provided around the valve springs 50.
