Abstract

309,764. Douglas Motors, Ltd., and Dixon, F. W. May 21, 1928. Channels and reservoirs in internal-combustion engine parts.-In an internal-combustion engine, a casing 18 enclosing parts of the valve-operating mechanism situated above the valve is supplied with lubricant which is led downwards to the valve-stem guides 29 by conduits 28 extending from the wall of the casing to the walls of the guides. In a horizontal-cylinder engine wherein the valves 10 are actuated by arms 12 on vertical spindles 11 having arms 13 at t.heir upper ends engaged by tappet rods 14 bearing through rockers 16 on cams 8 on a shaft 3 in the upper part of the crank case 4, the casing 18 encloses the rods 14 and arms 13 and has sleeve portions 19 embracing the upper ends of the spindles 11. The casing engages the crank case by dowels 23 and is secured thereto by a bolt 24 extending between the rods 14; the casing is also secured to the cylinder head by a screw 25. The cam shaft 3 is arranged in a trough 5 which receives lubricant splashed up from the crank case through an aperture 7, and lubricant is splashed from the trough into the casing 18 through the holes 15 traversed by the rods 14. Transverse webs 26 in the casing have holes 27 through which the rods 14 and the bolt 24 extend with such clearance as to allow the passage of a limited amount of lubricant to the conduits 28 and to the upper bearings 20 of the spindles 11. Passages 30, 31, 32 in the spindles lead lubricant to the lower bearings 21.
