Abstract
771,832. Steering vehicles. BALLAMY, L. M. Sept. 8, 1955 [June 8, 1954], No. 16822/54. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] In a vehicle suspension system of the divided axle type, each half axle is provided adjacent its outer end with a pair of brackets which are rigid with the half axle and which serve respectively as attachment points for the corresponding ends of a pair of transverse leaf springs, the first of the springs being rigidly connected at its middle to the vehicle body or equivalent and the second being pivotally connected to the vehicle body or equivalent about a fore-and-aft axis. As shown, front steerable wheels are carried by half axles 10, 10a pivoted on a bracket 16 and located by stays 13, 13a pivoted to a bracket 15. A leaf spring 19 is clamped to the bracket 16 and the forward underside of the bracket is formed with an inverted V-shaped channel 21 to constitute a pivot bearing for a triangular-shaped block 22 to which is clamped a second leaf spring 23. Each outer end of spring 19 is shackled to a bracket 26 attached to the half axle by a pin 27 and each outer end of spring 23 is shackled to an arm 35 of an upper bracket 33 attached to the half axle by an extension 32 of pin 27. The arm 35 is connected to the bracket 33 through a tongue and slot connection 37 with an inner member 38 of a rubber bush bearing 41. The forward end of each stay is pivotally connected to a stud 40 on a rearward extension 39 of the bracket 33. The wheels are steered through a pair of arms 45, 45a pivoted on the bracket 16 and coupled together by a link 49. A universal joint 47 connects the link 49 and arm 45 with a track link 50 which is actuated from a steering box (not shown) by a drag link 51 pivoted to an extension 53 of link 49.
