Abstract

Vat dyes are made by treating with a melt comprising anhydrous aluminium chloride and sulphur dioxide or a sulphite a product obtained by reaction of 6.Bz.1-dianthraquinonylamino - benzanthrone free from acylamino groups with an alkaline condensing agent. Substances lowering the melting point of the melt may be employed, especially alkyl halides. The products dye or print natural or regenerated cellulose olive-brown shades. In examples, the product obtained by alkaline condensation of 6.Bz.1-di-(a - anthraqunonylamino) - benzathrone (see example 1 of Specification 337,741 (Class 2(iii)) is treated with an aluminium chloridesodium chloride melt which has been treated with sulphur dioxide, with or without methyl chloride, isopropyl bromide, n-butyl chloride, or amyl chloride. A dyeing example is given.
