Abstract

771,685. Typewriters. SALMON, L. March 25, 1955 [May 6, 1954], No. 13237/54. Class 100(4) Music typewriters, case shift action. In a music typewriter its platen carriage or alternatively its type-basket is shifted so that the characters on the type-levers strike the paper at different heights, means is provided for sensitively raising and lowering the carriage on the typebasket through a total range equivalent to one octave in steps each equal to #th of the octave. As shown in Fig. 5, a shift key m is coupled by a link q to an arm n pivoted to a side plate t at O. Rigid with the link q is a hollow pin P containing a spring pressed ball engaging in indentations V in the side plate so that the key m can be positioned in any one of eight positions. The key is released by sideways pressure and key restored by means of a return spring bent about the pivot O. Printing-line indicators. The position of the shift key m is indicated by a slotted plate Y, Fig. 7, sliding over a series of staggered marks 50. Paper support. The roller platen a, Fig. 4, has a flat patten extension k covered with a skin of rubber or the like. Special platen rotation, line spacing. A hand-lever b, by means of a ratchet and pawl mechanism rotates the platen a distance equivalent to one octave. A similar lever at the other end of the platen rotates the platen one octave in the reverse direction. Ruling.. Stave lines are formed by the operation of keys 24-32 and traversing the carriage while they are still depressed. Keyboard. A standard keyboard arrangement with musical notation is used (see Fig. 1, not shown).
