Abstract

620,917. Typewriters. MINIMODELS, Ltd., and FRANCIS, B. F. Jan. 31, 1947, Nos. 3041 and 21171. [Class 100 (iv)] In a toy typewriter of the kind wherein a unit 26 comprising a paper carriage and impression cylinder is movable up to a typewheel 25 on depression of a key-lever to print through an ink ribbon, the key-lever is mounted on a rotatable rod 50 which actuates the carriage through an arm 1 directly engaging the unit. As shown, two key-levers 46, 47 are provided, and the unit 26 is transversely slidable on guide rods 31 mounted on flanged supports 27 reciprocated on rods 28 to and from the typewheel by the arm 1 which is centrally situated. The connection between the keys 46, 47 and the shaft 50 comprises discs 51 fixed to the shaft, each having a stop 52 which is engaged by a projection on the key levers so that the operation of one key turns the disc associated with the other key away therefrom and only the one key is depressed. Key 46 effects printing and letter spacing, while key 47 effects letter spacing only by imparting a shorter forward movement to the carriage runway. Letter-spacing. The side flanges of the carriage 26 have a series of holes 42, 43, which upon engagement with wedge tongue pieces 44, 45 towards each end of the stroke of the carriage effect axial displacement of the carriage. Type-wheels. The type is arranged in two rows on the rim of a wheel 12 rotated by a hand knob 22 until the requisite character printed on the top surface of the wheel registers with an indicator 70 formed by an upwardly turned extension of a platform 11 through which the type-wheel is journalled. Case-shift mechanism. The wheel 12 is raised and lowered by a key 60 engaging the lower end of the wheel spindle 17. Alignment for impression. The type is aligned by the engagement of a pawl 73 with notches 74 on a disc attached to the type-wheel. Alarms. Towards the end of the transverse travel of the carriage unit, a hammer is raised by a hinged lever and then released to fall and strike a gong. Line-spacing. The platen is rotated by hand knobs 37, one having an indented disc engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 39. Ribbon-guide. A transparent film 24 secured to the ribbon guides 23 has a central cut-out to enable the type to contact the ribbon. Carriage-release arrangements. By pressing the lever 47 against an abutment on one edge of its slot in the casing the carriage unit is free of both the tongues 44, 45, permitting hand movement of the carriage to any position.
