811,259. Typewriters &c. SALMON, L. June 12, 1957, No. 18606/57. Class 100(4) Music typewriters.; case-shift and platenshift action. A platen assembly or alternatively the type-basket, of a typewriter is shifted by a step-by-step shift action comprising a number of shift-keys 27, one for each amount of shift, which via levers 25, rotate a corresponding number of cams 23 which are each rotated different amounts to provide selectable shift positions. The cams are each provided with a cut-out semi-circular portion, each one being attached to a shaft 10 rotatively displaced from the next so that the action of the levers 25 rotates the cams 23 different amounts. Rotation of the shaft 10 is arrested when the lever 25 aligns with the plat part of the semi-circular portion. Rotation of the shaft 10 operates mechanism 11, 12, 13 connected to the platen or type-backet which is located in position by the detend mechanism 16, 17, 19. Indicators. The shift position of the platen or type-basket is visually indicated by a mark 43, Fig. 6 showing through a slot 44 in a marking plate 41 sliding in response to a shift action. Platen; paper guides. To accommodate the large vertical height of paper used at a time, the platen has a rubber faced flat striking plate 38 and the paper is guided by vertical retaining plates 39. Special platen rotation. A roller platen associated with the striking plate 38 may be instantly rotated eight steps, i.e. a rotation equivalent to one octave, by a lever moving a pawl and ratchet wheel attached to the roller platen. Keyboard, type-levers. A music typing keyboard has its keys arranged in groups, of symbols, of which two groups are normally used in association with each other, and other groups which may be used independently or together with the keys of either of the other groups. Type-levers. The type faces are of different widths ranging from one to two or more times normal, but the face construction and arrangement, see Fig 9, allows normal type-lever spacing.
