Abstract

771,272. Silencers for air &c. currents. BOLT BERANEK and NEWMAN, Inc. July 18, 1955, No. 20777/55. Class 7 (2). The only path, which is helical in form, for the flow of a fluid medium through an acoustically-absorbent conduit is provided by a helical member mounted within and along at least a portion of the conduit and peripherally bounded by the conduit. As shown in Fig. 1, the conduit 1, of metal or ceramic and preferably of circular cross-section, may form part of a silencer, an air-conditioning duct, a test cell for turbo-jet engines or any other fluid-carrying passageway and has a lining 3 of felt, rock-wool, fibre-glass or any other sound-absorbing material. A number of blades 5, 7, 9 disposed transversely of and at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the conduit are mounted upon a rod support 11 held in position preferably along the axis of the conduit, by one or more mounting rings 13 each provided with a number of struts 15; each blade overlaps the adjacent blade to provide a helical path between the blades and the blades touch or nearly touch the lining 3. In modifications (a), Fig. 2 (not shown), the pitch of the blades is increased, and (b) Fig. 3 (not shown) instead of separate blades 5, 7, 9 a continuous helical member is used. In further modifications, the blades 5, 7, 9, Fig. 4, or helical member, are provided with a layer 19 of fibre-glass, or other sound-absorbent material, and a perforated metallic facing 29. The conduit 1 may be fabricated from sound-absorbing material. Specification 721,860 is referred to.
