Abstract

The invention comprises ethers and thioethers of the formula R1-X-CH2-Y-R2, in which X and Y are either O or S and R1 and R2 are benzene nuclei at least one of which is substituted by at least one chlorine or fluorine atom up to a total of 3 halogens, and having optionally other substituents, the products selected being unsymmetrical compositions containing the same, and a process for preparing them by the reaction between the halogen compound R1XCH2 hal. and the alkali metal salt of the compound R2YH, corresponding to the product required. The products chosen must be unsymmetrical. In examples: 4-chloro-phenylthio-phenylthiomethane is obtained by the reaction between thiophenol and 4-chloro-phenylthiomethyl chloride; and a number of analogous compounds in which the phenyls may be substituted by further chlorines, fluorine, nitro, cyano, and carboxy, and X and Y may be also each O, or one O and one S are specified; compositions containing various of the specified substituted phenoxy-phenyl thiomethanes, phenyl-thiophenylthiomethanes, and substituted diphenoxy methanes with the usual ingredients for insecticides are specified (see Group VI). Specification 640,371 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises acaricidal compositions of the compounds R1 - X - CH2 - Y - R2 in which X and Y are each O or S, R1 and R2 are benzene nuclei, at least one of which is substituted by at least one chlorine or fluorine up to a total of 3 halogens, and having optionally other substituents, (see Group IV(b)) with liquid or solid diluents as dusts, dispersions and emulsions; in examples the active substance is made up by diluting acetone solutions thereof with aqueous methyl ethyl cellulose; a dispersible powder is made up with silicaceous earth and an ionic wetting agent for stable suspensions; a self-emulsifying concentrate is made up with petroleum oil and emulsifying agents; a suspension is made up with kaolin and wetting agent; and an aerosol composition. Representative products include 4 - chlorophenyl and parafluorophenyl - thiophenyl - thio - methane, 4 - chloro - phenoxy - phenylthiomethane and others. Known acaricides may be included.
