Abstract
771,004. Transmission line networks. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 3, 1955 [June 8, 1954], No. 16830/54. Class 40 (8). A transmission arrangement comprises a pair of coupled, parallel transmission lines, e.g. waveguides 1, 2, connecting two inputs A, D to two outputs B, C, a variable constantphase division of power between the outputs being achieved by means of differentially operated phase-shifters 5, 6 in the parallel lines. The lines are connected at spaced points by two 3 db. couplers 3, 4 in such a manner that, when the phase-shifts in the paths are equal, all the energy from the input A appears at B. Operation of the phase-shifters 5, 6 (e.g. by a motor 9) causes an advance in phase in one path and a corresponding lag in the other, the result being a variable division of power between the outputs B, C. The phaseangle between the input A and the two outputs B, C remains constant. Division of energy from the input D between outputs B, C is effected in a similar manner. If the inputs to A and D are in quadrature and the phaseshifters are varied cyclically, the output amplitudes at B and C will vary cyclically between the algebraic sum and the algebraic difference of the input amplitudes. One of the outputs may be terminated by a dummy load and the arrangement used as a constant-phase attenuator. Specification 752,590 is referred to.
