770,866. Earth-excavating apparatus. AUSTIN, J. R. June 29, 1955 [July 1, 1954], No. 18803/55. Class 68 (1). The piston-rod 14 of each piston-cylinder motor 12, 14 of a shovelling machine is protected by an elongated member co-extensive with and of greater width than the diameter of the rod ; and the member is so connected at one end to the rod that it may be moved to and fro in a direction parallel to that of the movement of the rod by the rod, whilst the other end of the member is mounted to slide on guide means disposed parallel to the axis of the motor. The member preferably comprises two telescoping parts 19, 20 provided with co-engaging abutments 29, 28 that permit the member 19, after first moving along guides 27, 28 on the part 20, to move the part 20 along a supply pipe 18 disposed parallel to the axis of the motor' after the rod 14 and the member 19 have moved a predetermined distance. The parts 19, 20 are telescoped together by the abutments 27 on the part 19 engaging the bearing-supporting flange 23 of the part 20.
