Abstract

A germicidal detergent composition comprises soap, or an anionic or non-ionic soapless detergent, or mixtures thereof, and a minor proportion (generally 0.01-5 per cent, preferably 0.2-2.0 per cent) of a thiuram sulphide of the formula Z:NC(S)SnC(S)N:Z where n is 5 or 6 and each Z represents either a single bivalent cycloaliphatic radical or two monovalent aliphatic radicals, which may be saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain, and preferably contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Specified compounds are N-tetramethyl thiuram hexasulphide and N - dicyclopentamethylene thiuram hexasulphide. The compositions may also contain carbonates, chlorides, silicates, phosphates, amines, glycerol, prefumes, opacifiers, dyes and cellulose derivatives.
